Kentucky Spirits Cabinet

October, 2024

Registration goes live in February at pinecroftwoodschool.com

New work on exhibit at the University of Wisconsin October 18 - March 3, 2024

The exhibition explores what it means to make on a school campus — and the power of design and craft to inspire creativity across disciplines. With a range of materials, from historic hand-made objects, to works of contemporary design, and masterpieces of dramatic and speculative contemporary craft, this exhibit continues the CDMC’s 2023-2024 season theme “Making, Remaking, Repair.” Through making and remaking, undergraduates in Berea College Student Craft learn to love something and become creative problem solvers in service of a happier, healthier, and truly flourishing world.

New Classes Listed at Pine Croft

Tables, stools, boxes, and all kinds of things

The summer schedule at Pine Croft is looking great. I’ll be teaching Foundations of Furniture Making, the People Collection Stool, and the Kentucky Spirits Cabinet.

We also have an amazing slate of traveling instructors.

New Class - Making Stools at Pine Croft

Spend three days making stools with me!

April 14, 15, 16 - SOLD OUT

Over the course of three days, we’ll each make two stools.  This project is a great introduction to the round mortise and tenon joinery of Windsor chairmaking and will enable you to boost your accuracy and productivity in your home shop.

The shop made jigs and fixtures used in the making of this piece will show you how to turn a home shop into a small-scale production studio.  Jigs for the tablesaw, bandsaw, router, lathe, and drill press will turn out accurate and reliable joinery.

After the joinery, we’ll look at changing some design elements so you can put your personal stamp on your stools.  We’ll finish up by applying milk paint or a natural finish.

Help Troublesome creek

The troublesome Creek stringed instrument Company needs our help

8/24/22

On July 28 the flood waters ran into Hindman, Kentucky and destroyed the shop of the Troublesome Creek Stringed Instrument Company. This is no ordinary company. Please take some time to check out their story and mission. Beyond making beautiful instruments, they support a culture of recovery - giving hope and purpose to people that have fallen on hard times.

Times couldn’t be harder right now. Cleanup has been underway for weeks and they’re just scratching the surface. They’ll need a lot to get back on their feet and continue their good work.

There is a GoFundMe started to help to rebuild their space and I hope this cabinet can help them go right up over their goal.

Raffle tickets are $5 a piece. Enter as many times as you’d like. Simply e-mail a screenshot of your receipt to me - spiecer@berea.edu

$50 gets 10 entries, $100 gets 20 - so on and so forth. I’ll put all those entries in a virtual hat and spin the wheel on Wednesday, August 31.

I’ll ship the cabinet for free to anyone in the contiguous US or deliver it if you’re nearby.

This Kentucky Spirits Cabinet is a dovetailed case in walnut. A sapwoody walnut veneer curves and shimmies up the arched door panels. The pulls were wrapped and woven in dyed reed and cotton cord by Chris Robbins, Director of Broomcraft at Berea College Student Craft.

new class alert!

The kentucky spirits cabinet at Pinecroft

11/14-11/19 at Pinecroft Woodworking School in Berea, KY

I’m excited to teach this six day adventure in cabinetmaking. Taking notes from thoughtful cabinetmakers like James Krenov and Wharton Esherick, we’ll spend a week making a fine piece of case work that will stretch your skills. We’ll focus on practical and impractical design considerations, cutting dovetails in three different ways, frame and panel work, resawing, side hung drawers, and so many little details that it takes to make a piece like this.

Pinecroft is a lovely spot, nestled in the hills of Berea, Kentucky. Just a few minutes away from the Pinnacles hiking trails, this spot is a great place to dive in and get lost in the shop for a week. Registration opens August 13 at 12:00

A Cabinet For Reproductive Rights

Benefiting The Kentucky Health Justice Network

Kentucky Spirts Cabinet

This dovetailed cabinet in curly cherry frames a book-match of cherry on the arched door panels. A single drawer runs on wood runners. The door and drawer pulls were woven with reed and cotton chord for a splash of tactile contrast.

With the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade recently, individual freedom of choice is under attack.Profits from the sale of this cabinet will be donated to the Kentucky Health Justice Network (KHJN).

The Kentucky Health Justice Network builds the power of Kentuckians to achieve reproductive justice. Its mission is supported through direct support, education and outreach.

Its work is guided by a reproductive justice framework, developed by women and people of color. KHJN believes reproductive rights are human rights, and that all people should be able to decide if, when, and how to parent.
